When Should You Change Your Filters?
The average AC filter replacement should be completed every two or three months. Air filters are designed to accumulate debris that is present in your air. Once enough of these contaminants are collected, the filter screen can become clogged. This will lead to a less efficient system and more polluted air for you to breathe.
Although changing your air filter every three months is a good rule of thumb, some home factors cause higher levels of debris in your air. If you have pets, have a high traffic home, or are more affected by allergens, you may want to check on your filters more often to keep your air as clean as possible.
Luckily, the HVAC filter replacement isn’t a hard process once you know which one to buy.
Which Air Filter Do I Buy?
There are a couple of different types of air filters you can buy for your home. The size of your current air filter should be marked on the filter itself, so you don’t have to worry about measuring it.
Besides size, you can buy filters based on filtration efficiency. Filters are rated from 1-12 on the minimum efficiency reporting value – or how well it filters the air. The higher the number means the better the filter’s ability to remove debris and bacteria from the air.
You can get minimal filtrations (1-4), a mid-grade one (5-8), or the best filtration (9-12). These will range from catching 20% up to 90% of particles coming through the system.
Once you decide on the size and efficiency for your filter, it is time to install it.
How To Install An Air Filter
Once you have located where your HVAC filter is, the installation should be simple. Loosen the fasteners on the filter cover and remove the old filter. Be careful since the filter is likely dirty – you can tell by the grey or dark color compared to the clean white filter.
Next, pop the new filter in following the arrows indicated on the side. Make sure it is snug in the opening, then put the cover back on. That’s all it takes to successfully install an air filter!
